A 29-year-old male was arrested by the Hawks for the murder of an off duty police officer. This happened in the Illovo area on the 23rd of August.
It is claimed that Constable Nhlanhla Mthethwa, 38, who was assigned to the Umbumbulu police station, was discovered dead in a sugar cane plantation by the patrolling guard.
He had a gunshot injury in his head. His private vehicle, service pistol with ammunition and cash, had been taken.
A murder case was listed at Amanzimtoti police station, and the case was designated to the Hawks members for intense investigation.
On Thursday, the 1st of October, an operation was conducted in Phoenix, and an individual was arrested. The suspect will appear in the Umbumbulu Magistrate Court on Tuesday.
In a separate occurrence, two individuals aged 17 and 26 will appear in the Empangeni Magistrates’ Court for the attempted murder of police officials and business robbery, which occurred at the Nhlanzini area Kwambonambi.
On Friday, the 2nd of October, a local shop was robbed by the suspects, and police were alerted. Upon their approach at the scene, bullets were fired towards them, and two members were injured. Both members were taken to the hospital for medical care.
Hawks members from Richards Bay Serious Organised Crime unit and Kwambonambi Detectives worked tirelessly since the incident. Their hard work generated positive results when the two were brought to book on Saturday.
