The man who tried to grab a young child at a restaurant in Florida on the West Rand in broad daylight last week will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court again on Friday.
Naseem Slamang is charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, attempted kidnapping and common assault.
During Slamang’s court appearance on Thursday, the court heard that he has three previous convictions and a pending case of theft against him. In October 2018, a warrant was issued for his arrest.
“The warrant has been executed, which means Slamang has appeared in court again and this case has also been postponed until Friday for the accused to obtain legal aid,” said Phindi Mjonondwane, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
The latest developments mean that Schedule 5 violations are now facing Slamang. He will also have to convince the court that it is in the interests of justice that he be released on bail. According to Mjonondwane, the state will oppose his bail application.
It will be decided on Friday on a date on which the accused will apply for bail. The court will also decide on an application by the media to film the court proceedings.
The dramatic alleged kidnapping attempt was captured on video and caused a stir on social media.
