ʼn Shopping center in Alberton in Gauteng was forced to close its doors on Monday morning after the Clicks store in the center was set on fire. The store was also nearly destroyed by the protesters.
According to Eric Maloka, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni emergency services, protesters entered Clicks in the Lemon Tree shopping center around 09:00 this morning and went on a rampage. They vandalized the store and also set it on fire.
Maloka says Alberton and Thokoza’s fire and rescue service was called to the store around 09:15 after an emergency call was received from the mall.
EFF members have been protesting at Clicks stores nationwide since early this morning. The retailer had earlier announced that its stores would be open on Monday despite the EFF’s threats to halt business at all of the retailer’s branches. Meanwhile, there are also reports that many Clicks stores have been closed due to the protests.
