Three men who were hired to help with renovation work at a house on a smallholding at Roodewal outside Bloemfontein, overpowered and robbed a 68-year-old resident.
Free State police spokesperson Motantsi Makhele said the suspects lured the victim into the house where the renovation work was being done and attacked him in the corridor.
“They tied his hands with cable ties and threatened him with a knife,” said Makhele.
The man was allegedly detained for hours. At 19:00, the victim pleaded with his attackers to take him to an ATM so that he could withdraw money for them if they would save his life.
The robbers loaded the man into his own bakkie and were on their way to the ATM, when an acquaintance of the victim who was driving past them stopped them because he wanted to talk to the man.
“The suspects panicked, stopped the bakkie and fled on foot. The Navalsig police were called to the scene,” said Makhele.
According to Makhele, two of the suspects arrived at the Bloemspruit police the next day where they wanted to report a complaint of robbery in the same area. They were taken to the Navalsig police station. Upon their arrival there, the police recognized them from the description given to the suspected small holding attackers and they were arrested.
