A farmer from the Odendaalsrus area in the Free State died this week after he was shot in the head on his farm in August.
Teboho Machakela, 37, was shot on the farm on August 19. According to reports, a shop is operating on the farm, and a group of suspects entered the shop on the day and shot Machakela before fleeing with cash.
Machakela was admitted to hospital and was apparently in a coma for six weeks after which he was discharged. He died Monday.
Thoko Didiza, Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, said she was shocked to learn of the murder of another young farmer from the Free State. “Machakela’s death is not only a great loss for his family and friends but also the agricultural sector.”
Didiza urged the police not to leave any stone unturned in order to ensure that the culprits end up behind bars.
Leona Kleynhans, Free State DA legislator, says according to available information, which has yet to be confirmed, there have been ten farm attacks in the Free State since 1 October that led to four deaths.
