Two robbers were killed and their accomplices possibly injured when they stormed into a church service in Wierdapark, Centurion, armed on Sunday morning.
A congregation member, Pieter van der Westhuizen, brother of the rugby hero Joost, fired back with deadly accuracy.
No one in the church was seriously injured.
Hannes du Buisson, the spokesman for the group Centurion Concerned Citizens (CCC), says they received an emergency call at exactly 11:30 from someone at the church asking for medical help and the police.
“Urgently needed! Urgently needed! Ag, Here. . . ” exclaimed the voice half begging when the person forgot the street name for a moment.
“They robbed us in the church. We shot two in the church. We urgently need help. ”
CCC immediately called for assistance.
Du Buisson says according to their information, one robber pressed his firearm right against the pastor’s head on the pulpit while congregation members were snatched around and beaten as the robbers demanded their belongings.
Then the shots rang back and forth.
“One member of the congregation shot the attacker at the pastor and wounded the other one. “Another member of the congregation grabbed the injured robber and flattened him so that he could not get away,” Du Buisson said.
