A 46-year-old brigadier and her 50-year-old husband appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning due to corruption and defeating the ends of justice connected with the Bushiri couple.

The self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary, are facing numerous charges, including money laundering and R102 million in corruption.

Hawks spokesman Katlego Mogale says the brigadier works in the police’s organized crime division’s head office.

She and her husband surrendered to the Hawks on Thursday morning in connection with charges against the Bushiri’s.

“The warrants for their arrest were issued yesterday in connection with R500 000, which was allegedly paid to the brigadier. The two were arrested in connection with corruption and defeating the ends of justice.”

The Bushiri couple broke their bail conditions last month and fled the country, after which Bushiri said on his Facebook page that they were back in their home country, Malawi.
