The house where five transit robbers were shot dead on Wednesday belongs to a police member.
During a visit to the scene in Klippoortjie on the East Rand, Bheki Cele, Minister of Police, said that the police member was one of the suspects who had been arrested. The other suspects were admitted to the hospital under police surveillance.
Five robbers were shot dead after a shootout broke out between them and the police. “One of them died on the roof of the house. He acted as a sniper to protect the other suspects. “
It is suspected that more suspects were able to escape as three vehicles were seized. The vehicles were allegedly hijacked earlier this year in separate incidents in Springs, Midrand and Boksburg North.
Four unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as an unknown amount of money were also seized.
According to Cele, the police knew about the planned attack on the van and were able to respond quickly.
The transit robbers raided a money van in Dawn Park in Boksburg that morning and robbed it.
