Police in the North West are investigating a case of attempted murder as well as two cases of house robbery after attackers raided a smallholding and a farm in the vicinity of Skeerpoort near Brits in the North West on Monday night.

The attackers allegedly specifically targeted farm workers and a farm worker was shot several times in the process.

According to Maroela Media Police spokeswoman Adele Myburgh said that a 50-year-old man and his 55-year-old wife were in bed in their home on a holding at about 9pm when a window of the house broke.

The suspects shouted from outside the house for the couple to get out of the house after which another window was broken. The suspects allegedly fired several shots and the man was wounded several times.

The owners of the holding heard a noise and called the couple to investigate. The suspects presumably heard the call and left chips.

According to Romano van der Spuy, chairman of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) in Hartbeespoort, the man was shot five times in the process. He was taken to a hospital for medical treatment after the incident.

Another attack was reported later around 11pm on a farm in the area. This farm is a few kilometers from the holding, Van der Spuy said.

Myburgh confirmed that a 55-year-old woman and her son were also in bed when they heard a noise outside their farmhouse.

“Suspects knocked on the door and said they were looking for someone. The woman indicated that the person they were looking for did not live there after which they tried to force the door open. The woman then opened the door and three men stood outside. “

One of the men aimed a firearm at the woman while another was armed with a knife.

The suspects demanded cash and a cellphone after which they left.

About 15 minutes later, another house on the farm was broken into. “A 30-year-old man was lying in his bed sleeping when he heard someone walking on the roof. A hand then aimed a pistol at him through the roof and the man was told to open the door. “

Two suspects assaulted the man before leaving him with money, cellphones, clothes and soft drinks on foot.

Myburgh said it was not clear at this stage how many suspects were involved and whether the incidents on the holding and the farm could be linked.
