KwaZulu-Natal police are searching for the relatives of an unknown woman in her late 30s, whose body was found in the Umzimkhulu River in the Gumatane area.

Police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala said the deceased was found in the river around 6am on Tuesday. The woman’s right leg was amputated.

“The deceased is light in features. She has a heart-shaped tattoo on her left shoulder as well as seven tattoos in the shape of stars on her neck. She was dressed in a dress with black-and-brown stripes and had beads around her hands and legs, ”says Gwala.

In a separate incident, the body of Thandeka Maphumulo, 26, was found on June 7 with multiple stab wounds in a footpath in the Giba Gorge area near the Mariannhill Toll Gate.

She was wearing a white blouse with blue flowers and a dark blue denim. A murder case has since been opened.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Stop Crime Number on 08600 10111.

Last week amidst the national call for South Africans to stand together against violence against women and children, the naked body of a 17-year-old Philippi girl was found in a street.

The cause of the girl’s death has not yet been determined.
