On Friday, the seven suspects accused of being involved in the Free State asbestos contract case were released on bail.

All of the individuals, including four companies, are accused of 60 charges associating fraud and corruption under schedule five offenses.

Businessman Edwin Sodi was allowed bail of R500 000, being the highest bail of the seven.

Supply chain officer Mahlomola Matlakala and director of ORI Group Abel Kgotso Manyeki were granted each R50 000, while the rest of the group were released on
R100 000 bail.

The contentious R255 million Free State case was postponed until the 11th of November.

Sipho Ngwema, the spokesperson for the (NPA) National Prosecuting Authority, says to be content with the magistrate’s bail amounts, adding that three more arrests could be made relating to this case.

“You will notice that what we try and do now is we invest more time in the investigation rather than file an arrest and then investigate once people have been arrested already,” he said.

The (SIU) Special Investigating Unit will be working to recoup R300 million of the funds lost in the R255 million asbestos case.
