Hartswater murder case postponed

Dan (82) and Breggie (73) Brand and their daughter Elzabie (54) were attacked on July 26 in their house on a holding in Magogong near Hartswater, abducted in their own cars and later killed.

Police spokesperson Mohale Ramatseba said the five suspects, Khomotso Mpumlwana (43), Tshepo Visagie (36), Tshepo Seolesang (20), Tshepaone Melato (19) and Realeboga Manyedi (18), are expected to return to court on August 27.

Mpumlwana’s application for bail will then be heard in court. The other suspects did not indicate whether they would apply for bail.

Ramatseba, meanwhile, confirmed ʼn Sahara laptop and a Samsung J5 phone belonging to the Brand family was found in a pawn shop in the Taung area. He says these items were exchanged for R400 at the pawnshop.

According to Ramatseba, the police also found a handbag at Mpumlwana’s house. The handbag contained various cards, including driver’s licenses, identification of documents, and store cards.

Farmers and residents of the Vaalharts scheme drove quietly through the streets of Hartswater and around the court in hundreds of vehicles with banners with slogans against violence and farm murders.

A handbag with IDs, bank cards and a driving license, which belonged to one of the Brand women, were found in Mpulwana’s house.

The suspects remain in custody until their next appearance.
