Iran embassy in SA involved in plot to kill South Africa's American ambassador says US intelligence

The American political website Politico reports that the Iranian embassy in Pretoria is involved in a plot to carry out the assassination of Lana Marks, according to a US intelligence report.

It is believed to be in retaliation for the US airstrike earlier this year in Baghdad, the Iraqi capital, in which Qasem Soleimani, terrorist leader of Iran’s powerful Kud force died. The force is part of the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC).

The airstrike in which Soleimani was killed severely escalated tensions between the US and Iraq.

The Guardian had already reported in 2015 on a leaked intelligence report on a secret network of Iranian agents in South Africa.

The website reports Marks is probably an easier target than US diplomats in other parts of the world such as Western Europe, where the US has stronger ties with local law enforcement agencies and intelligence services.

Marks has apparently been warned by the US intelligence agencies for some time now that she is a target of a possible assassination attempt.

A spokesman for the US Embassy said in a statement that the embassy did not want to comment at this stage.
