Farm murders are against the spirit of Ubuntu.
This is what KwaZulu-Natal premier Sihle Zikalala said after the murder of a Newcastle couple on Saturday.
“The ongoing killings of our farmers go against the spirit of Ubuntu. It is also an insult to the good work that farmers do to assist people in rural areas, ”says Zikalala.
Glen (63) and Vida (60) Rafferty were shot dead on their farm in Normadien near Newcastle on Saturday night after attackers waited for them when they arrived at the house.
The couple’s dog was also shot dead during the attack.
Zikalala says Glen and Vida are described as a couple who were admired for their active role in improving the lives of others.
“Farm murders remain a major problem in the province. We strongly condemn the murder of this couple, ”said Zikalala.
He called on local authorities to catch the culprits, as well as the public to “stand up against farm murders and to protect farmers” from crime.
Thoko Didiza, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, also condemned the murder of the Raffertys.
“Farmers play an important role in food security for the country and the continent,” Didiza said in a statement.
