Malmesbury Prison Break: All escapees arrested again

All the prisoners who escaped from the Malmesbury prison in the Western Cape on Friday have been arrested and again behind bars.

The Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services confirmed in a statement on Sunday morning that 68 escaped prisoners had been re-arrested within 76 hours of the escape.

Chrispin Phiri, spokesperson for the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola, confirmed to Maroela Media that only 68 prisoners escaped from the facility after the department initially suspected 69 prisoners had escaped from custody.

According to Phiri, meanwhile, it turned out that one of the inmates who was initially reported missing never left the facility and simply moved from cell.

In the statement, Lamola thanked all police officers, correctional officers and community members who helped search for the escaped inmates over the weekend.

Nine correctional officers sustained minor injuries and bruises in the incident.

The facility in question has since been brought under control, while some prisoners who were difficult to control have been transferred to maximum security facilities in the area.
