The Lowvelder reported, a well-known lawyer for a firm in Mbombela died this morning after he was attacked and shot on a smallholding in the Plaston area.

Gerrit Stander (38), a lawyer at Swanepoel & Partners, was assaulted by a group of men around 02:00. According to his father, Martiens, who lives on the same premises, the suspects allegedly cut the electric fence and broke down the security and wooden door to gain access to the home.

“Upon entering, the dog that was in the house started barking. Gerrit went to investigate and it seems that a struggle arose. He was shot three times in the process and died shortly afterwards in Kiaat private hospital, “said Martiens.

“His wife, Yolandi, sent out an emergency call on a WhatsApp group and when I arrived at them, I found my son on the floor.”

Christiaan, Gerrit’s younger brother, rushed him to the hospital, while Martiens stayed with Gerrit’s daughter (8).

Around 07:00 the family heard that Gerrit had lost too much blood and succumbed to his injuries.
“We are grateful that we had time to say goodbye to him,” Martiens said.
