The Mariannhill Task Team acted on information regarding criminals driving a Mariannhill policing precinct vehicle.

The vehicle was located along Thornwood Road, and a chase followed. The suspects shot at the police officers through the high-speed chase, and there was a shoot-out. The suspect’s vehicle was jammed by imminent traffic, and it hit a pole.

The suspects aged between 22 and 25 were put under detention. They were found in the hold of two unlicensed guns and ten rounds of ammunition. A stolen goat was further discovered in the suspect’s vehicle. The investigation showed that the goat was taken in the Panekeni area.

Two suspects are in the hospital under police guard, and the third suspect is in police custody.

The 22-year-old suspect in custody will appear before Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday, the 09th of October, while the other two will appear once released from the hospital.

Charges of attempted murder, possession of the stolen property, unlawful hold of guns and ammunition are being investigated.

Major General Thulani Gonya, the Acting KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, greeted the arrest of the suspects.
“I am glad that the police officers escaped unscathed during the shoot-out. The suspects will also be profiled to check their linkages with other cases,” he said.
