A rapist from Mothibistad in the Northern Cape was sentenced to a total of 20 years in prison.

Phenyo Semho, 27, was sentenced in Mothibistad Magistrate’s Court on Friday to ten years in prison on each of the two charges against him.

According to Police spokesperson Mashay Gamieldien, Semho raped a 54-year-old woman in a field near the Kahar settlement in Bothitong on February 3, 2014, around 11:00.

The woman was on her way home when Semho attacked her, threatening her with a knife and raped her. He subsequently fled the scene but was arrested later that day.

He was released on bail but did not appear in court for his next appearance.

A warrant for his arrest was then issued by the court.

Meanwhile, on December 2, 2014, Semho raped a 16-year-old girl, who was carrying her nine-month-old baby on her back.

Gamieldien says the girl was on her way home when she was attacked and raped by Semho at Battle Mount Village in Bothitong around 11am.

He demanded the girl’s cell phone, which she gave him. He then told her to lay her baby on the ground, after which he raped her.

Semho was finally arrested on January 11 this year after DNA linked him to both cases.
