A member of the South African National Defense Force (SANDF) appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on a charge of attempted murder after he allegedly intentionally infected a woman with HIV.

The civil rights organization AfriForum supports the complainant in court after the organization’s private prosecution unit became involved in the case in 2018.

According to a statement by AfriForum, the private prosecution unit learned after consultation with the prosecutor that SANDF had initially failed to provide the necessary information regarding the case to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Phyllis Vorster, prosecutor at the unit, said in the statement that the accused had legal representation in court today, as well as six bodyguards.

“After sustained pressure by the unit, the dossier is now complete and the NPA could continue to charge the accused.”

The case was postponed until 16 September 2020 today so that copies of the docket could be handed over to the accused’s legal team.
