A 39-year-old officer of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday after he allegedly blackmailed a company director.

Lynda Steyn, a spokesperson for the Hawks, says a summons was served on the director in February last year for outstanding tax returns and payments. However, the company’s auditor contacted the relevant SARS officer a month later and handed over all the necessary documents, as agreed.

“It is alleged that the officer then arranged a personal meeting with the director. During the meeting, the officer apparently promised the director that he could help to make his outstanding tax debt disappear in exchange for R20 000. ”

Steyn says the director and officer then arranged another meeting at the company’s office where it was agreed that the director would hand over R10 000 to the officer.

The director of public prosecutions (DPP) was notified of the meeting on Monday.
