While Zimbabweans are plagued by severe economic conditions, the government of Pres. Emmerson Mnangagwa spends millions of dollars buying luxury cars for senior government officials.
The British newspaper The Guardian reports the vehicles, which include luxury Range Rovers and Toyota pickups, have been distributed among Zimbabwean ambassadors and senior military officers, among others.
It is not known exactly how much the vehicles cost, but ministers confirmed their purchase in answers to parliamentary questions.
Foreign Minister Sibusiso Moyo told the Zimbabwean parliamentary committee that vehicles were purchased for 50 diplomats and other staff.
The newspaper reports Zimbabwe’s largest nursing union says its members can no longer afford basic goods. Inflation in Zimbabwe amounts to 785%. Thousands of doctors and nurses are now protesting against poor working conditions, a lack of personal protective equipment, and low salaries.
