18,000 new COVID-19 cases in South Africa

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize says South Africa has reported a record number of 18,000 new cases for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

This brings the cumulative number of infections in the country to 1,057,161.

“We have warned that the second wave of infections will exceed the numbers of the first wave. This is indeed the case after we have seen how sharply the figures and active cases are rising. ”

Mkhize says South Africa’s death toll stands at 28,469 after another 436 people died from the viral disease.
