Doctors call on government to re-examine alcohol sales, reinstate level 2 lockdown

State hospitals in the Western Cape are under tremendous pressure due to the sharp increase in Covid-19 hospitalizations and trauma cases such as alcohol-related injuries and road accidents.

In a statement on Sunday morning, the Western Cape Health Department said that patients who did not need vital intervention would have to wait longer at the hospitals’ emergency department and were therefore advised to go to a local clinic instead.

News24 has reported that doctors request that the government put the country back at level 2 of the state of restraint. This is to help hospitals nationwide cope with the pressure of rising coronavirus infections.

It was requested that regulations on the sale of liquor be looked at in particular. It is also expected that there will be stricter restrictions on the number of people who may gather and that the country’s borders will close.
