New coronavirus variant in SA says Mkhize

A new variant of the coronavirus, which spreads much faster, has hit South Africa.

Its initial origin is still unknown, but it was first noticed in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro. It is probably the main driver of the second wave of new coronavirus infections currently sweeping across the Eastern Cape, the Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal.

“However, there is no reason to panic,” Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said on Friday night when he made the news known to South Africans.

Mkhize further said that South Africans could protect themselves against the new variant by simply continuing “with what we know works. Wear your mask, wash your hands, and maintain healthy distances. We must remain faithful to this. The new variant can be brought under control. ”

Many other countries experienced worse second waves of coronavirus infections than was the case with their first wave.
