ANC councilor Mike Kwenaite, 56, died at Cuyler Hospital in Uitenhage on Tuesday. Two other councilors, Ncediso Captain (ANC) and Mongameli Bobani (UDM), also died of the virus earlier.

The mayor, Nqaba Bhanga, expressed his condolences to Kwenaite’s colleagues, family, and friends.

From 2000 to 2011, Kwenaite was a councilor and a nine-year member of the mayoral committee.

He briefly returned to the municipality in 2016 as a manager in the mayor’s office. Danny Jordaan was then the mayor.

After Bicks Ndoni, the ANC’s chief whip, died in February, Kwenaite returned to the metro council.

“During his time at the municipality, councilor Kwenaite played a key role in numerous initiatives of the city. We will miss his valuable contributions.

“His untimely death is a reminder of the devastating effect Covid-19 has on our lives,” Bhanga said.

Luyolo Nqakula, regional chairman of the ANC in the metro, also expressed the party’s condolences to Kwenaite’s family.
