Sixteen police officers have been released on bail after appearing briefly in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday in connection with the activities of a drug syndicate at OR Tambo Airport.
“They were released on bail of R15 000 each,” said Phindi Mjonondwane, spokesperson for the national prosecuting authority in Gauteng.
According to Mjonondwane, 12 policemen were arrested on Friday, after which four more surrendered this past weekend.
They appeared in court on charges of extortion, theft, drug trafficking and obstruction of justice.
“The court imposed strict bail conditions. The accused must report to their nearest police station once a week. “They may not leave Gauteng without the permission of the investigating officer and may under no circumstances have contact with the eyewitnesses,” Mjonondwane said.
The case was adjourned until October 14 for further investigation.
