A woman who worked for the murdered Hettie Deacon (79) for 24 years appeared in Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning for her murder.
Sophie Mmako, 51, and her boyfriend Lazarus Mahlo, 41, were arrested Friday for the murders of Hettie and her daughter, Lizette Deacon, 55.
Mmako attended the two businesswomen from Polokwane’s funeral service last Tuesday.
Mmako showed no emotion with her court appearance, and stood with her arms folded.
She was arrested in Polokwane on Friday morning and Mahlo about an hour later in Tembisa on the East Rand.
Mahlo previously worked in the kitchen of one of the Ocean Basket restaurants in Polokwane that belonged to Lizette Deacon.
Lizette and Hettie were assaulted early in the evening of 10 September in their townhouse in the Alpetra complex in Welgelegen in Polokwane, stabbed with knives and beaten in the trunk of Lizette’s white Honda hatchback vehicle. Their bodies were found hours later in the back of the vehicle about 25 km outside the city.
The case against Mmako and Mahlo has been postponed until Friday for further investigation. They will then appear with Mudau and Amid in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court.
The police are meanwhile looking for another man who can assist them in the investigation. “The man, named Owen, is requested to report to the nearest police station, as he may be able to assist us in the investigation,” said Police spokesperson Motlafela
