The mother of the former rugby player who was arrested in connection with the murder of a top detective from the Western Cape, was shot dead in a farm attack more than two years ago.
Zane Kilian (39), who played as a prop for the Griquas, Kings, and the South African Barbarians, was arrested on Friday morning in connection with the murder of Charl Kinnear.
Kilian’s mother, Heila Kilian (63), was killed in April 2018 on a farm about 2 km outside Stilbaai.
Five gunmen attacked her and her sister, Brenda Thomas, while they were roasting meat with two friends.
The attackers were dressed in orange overalls and wore balaclavas. Kilian’s mother died at the scene and the two men were tied up.
The case against the alleged killers is still ongoing.
Kilian was arrested for Murder, conspiracy and the illegal interception of cellphone communications.
Until his death, Kinnear led the investigation into the illegal issuing of firearms licenses.
In the weeks before his death, he worked in Springs on the East Rand where he investigated dossiers related to two senior police officers’ involvement in the smuggling network.
