Six people were released on bail of R5 000 each in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday after they were arrested over the weekend in connection with large-scale alleged tender fraud with the police.
Sindisiwe Twala, the spokesperson for the investigative directorate of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), identified the six suspects. Lawrence Thahane, lt.col. Tshepo Mashego, Anna Catharina du Preez, an administrative worker at the police’s procurement management department, as well as civilians Pragalathan Gouden, Volan Prithviraj, and Kumarasen Prithviraj.
The six accused are accused of fraud, money laundering, corruption and theft which led to the South African Police Service losing just over R85 million.
This includes the awarding of a tender of almost R56 million to affix, among other things, trademark badges on police vehicles.
