Omar Ismail, his wife Asmaa, and their 21-month-old daughter, Yusraa, returned home on July 16th when they were caught in the crossfire between police and hijackers.
Omar, 30, an accounting firm employee, was shot in the back of the head. Asmaa, 26, medical technologist and two months pregnant, was shot in both legs while seated in the back of their car with their daughter. Yusraa was shot in the arm and stomach.
Asmaa had lost to much blood from her leg and suffered critical tissue, muscle, and bone damage, and to be able to save her baby, doctors had to remove her right leg under her knee.
Rehana Mahomed said she wanted justice for her daughter.
Colonel Thembeka Mbele said that five suspects tried to hijack the family.
“Police approached the suspects, and a shoot-out ensued.” The suspects then fled the scene. A case of attempted murder and attempted hijacking has been opened at Mayville Police Station.
Police have recovered a firearm with its serial filed off.
The suspects were in a stolen Toyota Etios.
On Friday, three men who got out of a white BMW hijacked a driver of a Golf 7 GTI in Merebank.
Captain Nqobile Gwala said that the vehicle was then tracked to Umlazi.
Two suspects were arrested. They had two unlicensed firearms, ammunition, balaclavas, and gloves.
The two men possibly linked to the family’s shooting are now expected to appear in the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court.
