Almost a year after Julius Malema, and his party shared several controversial quotes from former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on Twitter and Facebook, the Human Rights Commission (HRC) is now dragging him to the Equality Court.
The offending statements include “the only white man you can trust is a dead white man” as well as the statement “our party must continue to instill fear in the heart of the white man, our real enemy”. According to the HRC’s court documents, these quotes are two out of four that violate the Equality Act and amount to hate speech.
Malema shared a video with a series of photos with well-known quotes from Mugabe on September 14 last year. It appears along with the EFF’s logo on the video.
The HRC claims the statements promote racial hatred, hits to cause harm, is unfair discrimination on the grounds of race and disseminates information that unfairly discriminates.
The organization is asking the court, among other things, to order that the statements be removed from the EFF’s social media platforms within 24 hours of the court order and that Malema and the EFF withdraw the statements unconditionally and apologize for them.
The video with the statements is still visible on Malema’s Twitter page.
