KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC, Kwazi Mshengu visited a high school in Folweni on Monday, following an incident where a pupil was stabbed and killed allegedly by another pupil.
Learners have organized themselves into different gangs, and Mshengu said to have visited the school to deal with the situation.
The circumstances have become uncertain because recently, a former learner was killed by a school learner.
Mshengu has described the situation as unpredictable.
Most learners at the school aren’t able to attempt school since they belong to a gang, and they now have become afraid to come to school because they are being threatened.
Mshengu says that school is not for people that have decided that school is not for teaching and learning purposes but criminal activities.
The department has met with some members who joined the gangs and asked them to leave school and come back with their parents.
The department is looking for assurance from the progenitors, should their children go against the code of conduct, the school will not hesitate to expel them.
They do not want a situation where learners attend school under fear and where not even teachers are safe.
