The leader of the DA in the Free State, Roy Jankielsohn says the ANC must repay the money it received in the form Edwin Sodi.
The minister of health, Dr. Zweli Mkhize, confirmed last weekend that the ANC had received more than R8 million from Sodi. However, he strongly denies that he personally benefited from the donations.
“Mkhize’s statement confirms that the ANC was a beneficiary of state capture in the Free State. “The money that was diverted to the ANC’s coffers was supposed to benefit the people of the Free State – many of whom are hungry, needy and without basic services,” Jankielsohn said.
Sodi was arrested last week along with several others in connection with the controversial Free State asbestos audit contract. The contract, which was intended to identify and remove asbestos roofs in the Free State, was allegedly fraudulently awarded.
Jankielsohn says the events confirm what the DA has been arguing in the Free State legislature for more than a decade: That many tenders and state contracts are awarded in the Free State with certain conditions attached to them.
“The conditions are that the people and companies must finance the ANC’s election campaigns at the expense of the people of the province. “Sodi’s donations to the ANC are just the tip of the iceberg,” he said.
