Jack Bloom of the DA do not intend to withdraw his remarks about Bandile Masuku, Gauteng MEC for health.
This comes after Bloom on Wednesday said Masuku should be fired for the alleged misappropriation of money at the Nasrec Field Hospital in Johannesburg, as well as for his alleged connection to Covid-19 tender fraud.
“The cost of the (Nasrec) facility to date amounts to about R350 million. So far, only 700 patients have been treated here, while it was built to accommodate 1,500 patients. On August 28, there were only 25 patients in the facility. “
The Nasrec Field Hospital has been in use since June.
“The health department under Masuku has therefore spent almost R500 000 per patient,” Bloom said in his statement.
Motalane responded to that statement by demanding that Bloom withdraw it because his facts were inaccurate and did not take into account any context.
“His remarks about the running away cost of the facility are doing great damage to my client’s name,” Motalane said in a statement.
According to him, the cost of the field hospital is only R770 per patient and the capacity of the facility has been reduced to 503 beds for some time.
“Bloom and the DA’s statements are nothing more than an attempt to score cheap political points,” said Motalane.
Masuku was placed on special leave in July after allegations that he influenced the award of a R125 million contract for personal protective equipment to Royal Bhaca Projects.
