The leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, Julius Sello Malema said in a statement on Twitter that “We must oppose whiteness everywhere it raises its ugly head. We must crush it, including the differently looking ones from amongst us who stand with it. The same energy we used on Zuma must be used against them. Revolution is a disruption of status-quo; that’s what Level 1 means!”
A Twitter user asked Malema, “Who are the differently looking ones? Asking for a friend” and Malema responded, “Ask your Father”.
Due to multiple reports from Twitter users, the platform investigated the Tweet. The EFF leader later Tweeted a screenshot of Twitter saying the Tweet did not break any rules.
The HRC has previously announced that it will continue a court case against EFF leader Julius Malema over a tweet in which he posted a video of blatantly racist quotes by the former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe.
The HRC believes these quotes are contrary to the Equality Act and it is challenging the EFF before the Equality Court. A court date has yet to be set.
The Human Rights Commission is also investigating a complaint of hate speech against Floyd Shivambu, deputy leader of the EFF, who said on Twitter that “all colonial murderers” must be “wiped off the earth”.
