The South African government has expressed concern after Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) agreed to forge new ties.
“While the UAE has the sovereign right to enter into diplomatic relations with the Government of Israel, it is regrettable that this was done on the basis of another agreement relating to the fate of the Palestinian people without their involvement. , ”The Department of International Relations and Cooperation said in a statement.
According to the department, most countries are opposed to the occupation of the West Bank by Israel because it would be a violation of international law.
“The agreement between the United States, the UAE and Israel means a temporary suspension of the occupation (of the region) which is being celebrated as a diplomatic breakthrough. However, the agreement does not commit Israel to ending its plans to further expand its sovereignty over Palestinian territories and these people.
“The agreement also does not commit the government of Israel to negotiations within the internationally agreed guidelines,” the department said.
The South African government reiterated its conviction that any initiative aimed at resolving the Middle East conflict must also take into account the needs and aspirations of the Palestinian people.
