Prisoners may again be visited in prisons by friends and family.
Singabakho Nxumalo, spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services, said on Monday that visits to the country’s 243 correctional centers are allowed under strict conditions during level 2 of the isolation period.
Visits are now limited to one visit without contact per inmate per month. Only one visitor per inmate per visit is allowed.
Visits must be arranged 48 hours in advance and visitors will not be allowed without an appointment. Visitors should sign up 30 minutes before an appointment.
According to Nxumalo, visiting hours are between 09:00 and 15:00 on visiting days.
No visitor will be allowed in a correctional center without a face mask.
Prisoners’ legal representatives must also make prior arrangements to visit his or her client. “Legal representatives and prisoners can communicate on urgent matters by telephone after the head of the center has given approval and if the circumstances and resources allow,” Nxumalo said.
