President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the country tonight on the government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ramaphosa spokeswoman Tyrone Seale confirmed the president would address the country at 8 p.m.

The Cabinet and the National Coronavirus Command Board met earlier this week to discuss the possibility of new restrictions following a sudden rise in Covid-19 infections at numerous hotspots nationwide.

It is understood that the Command Council is in favor of a restriction on alcohol sales and limited trading hours for bars and restaurants in areas where infections have skyrocketed.

There have since been repeated calls from various quarters for the current level 1 restrictions to be tightened to halt an increase in infections in places such as the Eastern Cape.
