André Pienaar (51), who a week ago allegedly led the charge in Senekal was denied bail.
Magistrate Buti Mlangeni says it is uncertain whether Pienaar will be able to control his bipolar disorder if he is released on bail.
He also said that video footage showed Pienaar strangling a female police member. It is also gender violence, he said.
He further said the fact that Pienaar had affidavits from two detainees to confirm that he did not set the court cells on fire told him that Pienaar would interfere with witnesses.
Mlangeni further said that Pienaar could possibly cause public violence again.
As was the case last Friday with Pienaar’s first court appearance, there was again a large police presence in Senekal on Tuesday where Pienaar’s bail hearing continued.
The trial has been adjourned until November 20.
