Police Minister Bheki Cele said on Tuesday night he was shocked and disgusted by the actions of protesters at Senekal Magistrate’s Court earlier in the day.
“While we all condemn the brutal murder of Paul Roux’s young man, it gives absolutely no one the right to exercise their own right – no matter what the situation. “This kind of lawlessness cannot be justified or taken lightly,” Cele said.
Cele questioned the protesters’ motives and anger towards the police.
“There is no logic in that when protesters set fire to a police vehicle – the same resource that is meant to assist them. It is also astonishing that the anger of the community is aimed at the police when arrests were made and the suspects appeared in court. “
Cele condemned the events, saying such criminal behavior would never be tolerated. He is determined that the perpetrators will be arrested immediately and has asked the police to act immediately.
Cele reminded South Africans that the right to peaceful demonstration is part of any democracy, but “the right is not absolute and comes with responsibilities”.
