A major controversy erupted on social media over a video of matric pupils attending “Brackenfell High School in Cape Town’s matric farewell”.
According to South African media, In the video, you can see how the matriculants arrive at a venue where a red carpet has been rolled out for them, among other things. The pupils, dressed in posh evening dresses and suits, are dropped off in luxury vehicles there.
The video got some people upset on social media because only white students from the school, according to the media, attended the reception. None of the school’s other colored matriculants were apparently invited.
People on social media accused the school of racism. It was also said that the school encourages segregation. People wanted to know why students of color were not invited and what the school and the governing body did.
What really happened:
The principal, Jannie Muller, said that the reception was definitely not a school event. It was also not arranged under the school’s name or by any of the teachers or any members of the school’s governing body.
“It was a private party organized by some of the parents, and it was not even held here with us.”
Muller said he was discouraged about the allegations being made against his school. “I wish I could only go on social media once to give people the facts.”
He said people who know the school and its ethos should know that the school and its governing body will not allow such a thing.
“There are 250 matriculants here, there were probably not (more than) 30 matriculants at that reception.”
What happened today:
A group of about 40 to 50 parents, residents and guards from private security companies confronted the group in Frans Conradie Drive.
The two groups threatened each other and threw stones at each other. Fist blows were also handed out.
On Monday, in a statement the EFF promised to terrorize Brackenfell.
