During a fiery debate and the speaker being kicked out at the council chamber, Port Elizabeth received a new mayor.

The removal of the ANC paved the way for the election of Nqaba Bhanga, the DA’s Eastern Cape leader, as the new mayor of the metro.

Bhanga was elected during a council meeting that lasted more than 11 hours.

Opposition councilors who were determined to remove the ANC remained in the Veremark Hall and City Hall, even after Speaker Buyelwa Mafaya announced after 6 pm that the meeting had been postponed.

The speaker tried to reschedule the meeting after being assaulted by three men.

The men, who were allegedly armed, pulled her around in front of shocked councilors. She was kicked out of the courtroom.

Bhanga’s appointment was not disputed.
