The DA’s federal congress has decided that farm attacks and murders should be declared a priority and hate crime.
On Sunday, 91.38% of delegates voted in favor of a resolution to stop farm attacks and killings. About 38 policy resolutions will be discussed throughout the morning.
Dianne Kohler-Barnard, the DA MP who proposed the resolution, said in her speech that members of rural communities are often “mutilated and blinded” in farm attacks while the “ANC-minded media” is silent about it.
According to her, farm dwellers – black and white – are more exposed in rural areas where criminals have time to “sharpen chopping knives”.
According to the resolution, farm attacks and murders must be declared a hate crime and a priority crime. Offenders should be given heavy sentences if it can be determined that the motive for the crime was hatred based on the victim’s identity as a farmer.
The resolution also proposes that specific rural security plans be drawn up in every rural police district in the country. Rural police units must be established at each police station to serve at least one rural sector.
