EFF leader Julius Malema’s threats against police members over the weekend will not be taken lightly, said Bheki Cele, Minister of Police.

On Sunday, Malema addressed his supporters in the Mohokare municipality in the Free State and said they were not afraid of the police.

He said the police are cowards and their uniforms make them act superior. The EFF will call on police members to fight “in their own homes, with their families.”

Cele said on Monday that he had taken note of Malema’s “reckless, irresponsible and dangerous” statements with horror. According to him, Malema encouraged violence against members of the police and their families.

“I think the EFF leader has exceeded the limit. You are not going to threaten the police and think that their arms will be folded.

“The task of the police is clear and is defined in the Constitution. It is about protecting people and preventing, investigating and combating crime, ”Cele said.

“The police are also there to maintain order and law. Nobody has the right to threaten the police when they do their job. “

The minister called on the police to protect themselves, adding that he was confident that, if necessary, they would be “more than capable of defending themselves” should they be attacked.

“The threat to the lives of police members and their families will not be tolerated. Servants of the law should never be used to steal political currency from them. ”
