COVID-19 cancels first ODI match between England and SA

The first one-day match between England and South Africa at Boland Park in Paarl was canceled barely half an hour before the match would start at 10:00 on Sunday morning.

Two of the hotel workers who stay with the players in the “bio-bubble” were apparently tested positive for Covid-19, SuperSport reported.

This is after a third Protea player was tested positive on Friday for the virus that forced Cricket South Africa to postpone Friday’s match between the two teams at Newlands to Monday. This match and the rest of the series are probably now in the balance as well.

According to theEnglish Cricket Board, two English players received unconfirmed positive results. The players and management are now in self-isolation in their hotel rooms while awaiting further instructions from their medical team.

A decision on the remaining matches will be made once the test results have been confirmed by independent medical experts.

Ashleigh Giles, England’s director of cricket, said the touring team would work with CSA to determine the way forward.

“It’s sad that we can not play today, but the well – being of our players and support staff is paramount,” said Giles.
